Crupp, a young white man, is in a Cleveland area hospital recovering from a severe beating he received from off-duty Akron police office Campbell after a female Crupp was accompanying rejected Campbell's advances. This occurred Saturday night.

The incident occurred outside an upscale, downtown bar that Campbell and other cops had entered following a black tie event for a police charity.

Crupp claims two men held him down while Campbell stomped him, and witnesses as well as CCTV seems to bear this out. No news yet on whether these men are also cops, are being sought or will be charged.

Campbell has arranged to surrender to police tomorrow. He is facing assault charges.

I apologize for not linking; the Guardian and the NY Daily News as well as the Plain Dealer have the story.

How the hell did a man like Campbell get hired as a cop?

There is some SERIOUS conflicts with the information you gave regarding this case as presented in the OP, Madeline. An "Upscale" downtown bar in Cleveland? Really?

Ya. We have quite a nice downtown, BD. 4 star hotels, a theater district, etc.

Aah, yes, the Plain Dealer...always hated that paper. They're practicing some character assassination here against the victim. Sound familiar?

The man who says he was attacked by an off-duty Akron police officer outside a black-tie police fundraiser pleaded guilty in 2007 to assaulting a Parma Heights police officer.

Steven Crupp, 31, was left with six broken ribs and a fractured hip after police said Adam Campbell, 28, and two other men assaulted him outside the Wyndham Cleveland at Playhouse Square in the early morning hours of March 29.

Yes, and the readers are upset about it. Well, some are. This is completely inappropriate for a newspaper in a city whose cops are as big a problem as ours are.
