Wow, that is interesting since Hoover died in 1972... and Reagan didn't become POTUS until 1981... Silly Liberals, Brains are for Conservatives

Reagan was clearly SOMEONE'S remote controlled toy. Not saying Hoover, but I do think Hoover chose the short list Reagan appeared on.

He was a candidate for the GOP nomination in 1960, lost to Nixon, who then lost the election to JFK.

Interesting documentary on this, and related events, free on YouTube: "Best of Enemies", about the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr. which began in 1960, on ABC.

Edit: I am wrong, but I can't figure out the correct dates, etc. I think the election of interest, as to Reagan's failed bid for the GOP nomination is 1960, not 1964. But wikipedia says Reagan was not seeking the GOP nomination that year.

Anyone care to correct my terrible confusion?

Ummm... Reagan didn't run in 1964. Neither did Nixon. And, uh... JFK was already dead.

Is this thread really an elaborate Candid Camera skit?

The documentary is free on YouTube:

"BBC Timeline: The Secret File On J. Edgar Hoover"

Almost unbearable. This man tried, and very nearly succeeded, to create a fascist dictatorship in place of our democracy. His theft of public funds and flagrant homosexual affair with his longtime aide, along with his alcoholism and complusive gambling, left him vulnerable, and the organized crime families aka the Mafia blackmailed Hoover, ordering him around like a servant.

Hoover hated JFK, and the Mafia hated RFK, so Hoover helped them get away with assassinating a president. Probably with assassinating RFK as well....and maybe MLK?

Nixon and Hoover hated one another because they couldn't agree on which one should be our new dictator. God help us if they had cooperated!

Ay ye ye! And yet, Hoover is the only civilian who had been given an American state funeral. Everyone else who got one was a president.

I need brain bleach!

Your thoughts?
The documentary is complete fiction.

It went off the rails the instant they started talking about the mafia assassinating JFK.

Oswald acted alone and that is fact and the wierd leap in to fictional conspiracy theories destroys any credibility the documentary might have.

Ever see the tv show "The FBI", starring Ephraim Zimbalist Jr.? Ran 1965 to 1974.

(What a name! What a gorgeous man!)

And meanwhile, IRL, Hoover is killing Black Panthers, etc. in COINTELPRO! And the fucking CIA is peddling crack in all the American ghettos, so as to make money to buy guns for the "Contras"!

Both horror stories are reasonably well described in Wikipedia.

Point is, Ephraim was the picture of American manhood, oozing integrity from every pore.

His tv show was public relations for an organized gang of murderers and thugs that OUR tax dollars supported.

It boggles the mind.
They are conspiracy theories described on wikipedia they are not proven events and they are ludicrously stupid

boontito.......no, I am stuck using my tablet and having a horrible time navigating around the web. I checked, agree with you and already corrected my previous post.

Meanwhile, I feel sure Reagan was a candidate for the GOP nomination at least once, before his successful race in......1980? But my memory sucks, and as I said, I am not as nimble in the innerwebs ATM.

Reagan ran in 1976 but couldn't win the nomination from the incumbent, Gerald Ford.

Well, the BBC produced it, and they sourced every fact. Usually more than once.

It's difficult to deny Hoover had an agreement of some sort with Lansky and the other Godfathers.

I think the BBC's reputation for solid reporting means, you owe this documentary a second listen with your ears OPEN.

Amirite, Dangermouse?

True. Which proves fuck all, as to the events described in this BBC documentary.

Or did you sincerely believe the Warren Commission report was the whole story?
