In 1916, Grigori Rasputin, a self-fashioned Russian holy man, was killed by Russian nobles eager to end his influence over the royal family.

In 2006, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who had been convicted of the 1982 massacre of 148 Shiite men and boys, was executed by hanging in Baghdad.

In 2006, a state funeral service was held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for former President Gerald R. Ford.

They were fools to assassinate Rasputin, if you ask me...

If he were still around a year later, I dare say he might even have stopped the Bolsheviks...

Anyway, a big Russo-Turkish war also started today: Russo-Turkish War (1806–1812) - Wikipedia

Soviet Union was also officially created today: Treaty on the Creation of the USSR - Wikipedia

And also it is the anniversary of the 2013 terrorist attacks in Volgograd, Russia:

Afterwards, local security forces, in turn, engaged in a punitive Operation Vikhr (Vortex); supposedly "anti-terrorist" in nature, but where, essentially, any people who looked like non-Slavic minorities were rounded up, in restaurants, movie theaters, and on the streets in general

People were arrested, many were kept in jail for prolonged periods, without any good reason...

You didn't even have to be actually Muslim, either, to get caught up in. One of my own cousins did, he was visiting the city, at the time, and got dragged off a bus. Screamed that he is Armenian, and Christian, showed the bloody crucifix on his neck, but they didn't listen/believe him. Spent almost two months locked up down there, before the family were able to get him out...

Such is life, in Russia...

In 1972, Pittsburgh Pirates great Roberto Clemente and four other people died in a cargo plane crash en route to deliver supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua. The plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from Puerto Rico.

In 1983, the court-ordered breakup of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. took effect.
In 1985, singer Rick Nelson, 45, and six other people were killed when fire broke out aboard a DC-3 that was taking the group to a New Year’s Eve performance in Dallas.

In 1999, Panama assumed full control of the Panama Canal.

In 1999, Boris Yeltsin resigned as president of Russia, leaving Vladimir Putin acting president.

Yep, they actually did a joint New Year Address on TV for the night between 1999-2000, first Yeltsin, his last, and then Putin, his first...

But did nothing to stop the hacking and interference

His cabinet colluded with Russia by relasing the Russian Dossier to the press
Mitch McConnell should explain why he obscured Russian interference in our election

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should explain why he blocked a bipartisan denunciation of Russian interference in our election before voters went to the polls.

Americans deserve to hear why McConnell did not trust them with the evidence that he and 11 other congressional leaders received in a confidential briefing in September.

Not an insult to your intelligence ...

BUT, you might want to review your 7th grade civics, there are 3 branches of government. Legislative branch does not have the power of enforcement.

that is the powers vested to the EXECUTIVE BRANCH... head of the Executive branch that did nothing to prevent the interference was BARAK OBAMA.

Bullshit.
That meme has been debunked so many times I've lost count.
Obama imposed sanctions and booted out Russian agents.
Donald Trump did diddly squat.
Trump insulted our intelligence agencies by believing Putin over their findings.
Trump was happy to have the help of Russia to get elected. He's not about to do anything to stop them from interfering in the next election.
