Outrage in Italy as court finds victim "too ugly to be raped"

Italy’s Justice Ministry has ordered a preliminary inquiry into an appeals court ruling that overturned a rape verdict in part by arguing that the woman who was attacked was too ugly to be a credible rape victim.

The ruling has sparked outrage in Italy, prompting a flash mob Monday outside the Ancona court, where protesters shouted “Shame!” and held up signs saying “indignation.”

The appeals sentence was handed down in 2017 — by an all-female panel — but the reasons behind it only emerged publicly when Italy’s high court annulled it on March 5 and ordered a retrial. The Court of Cassation said Wednesday its own reasons for ordering the retrial will be issued next month.

Bajisima,

Shouldn't there be a picture so we can judge for ourselves?

Misogyny seems to be a thread in Italian society. There was a mayor who tried to ban ugly women from wearing bikinis on his town's beach, and their TV game shows were often "decorated" with scantily-clad women until quite recently.

This is hilarious.

I love how your OPs so often go against the grain and post stories not chained to partisan politics.

Of course the reasoning behind this ruling is absurd and should be over-turned though. It's unfortunate but not surprising to learn we aren't the only country that has idiots on the bench.

How is Misogyny a political thing?

Obviously, this was a terrible decision and a really bad look for those judges.

Mr. Jeremy,

I found the line "the appeals sentence was handed down in 2017 -by an all female panel-..." hilarious.

This doesn't make any sense to me.

I didn't say Misogyny was a political thing. And I said this was a bad ruling that needs to be overturned. So I'm not sure what your beef with my comment is.

Interesting court case.

The content of the story/article isn't quite a sensational as the headline. Sounds like there were also a number of procedural problems with the trial.
