His name is Vyacheslav Korneev, an interesting and very badass dude, whose whole life, basically, been one war for Russia after another...

He started, as a young conscript, in artillery; but worked his way quickly enough into elite special forces, Spetsnaz, Airborne, to be exact

He volunteered to Chechnya where, in '95, he and 9 others, under heavy enemy fire, captured a building right in front of Chechen separatist leader Jokhar Dudaev's palace, in the capital Grozny, and provided cover fore from there for other incoming federal forces. Got his first decorations for that one. Later, in '99, he would be in Dagestan, to help repel a Chechen jihadi offensive and participate in the federal counterattack now under Putin, which would reconquer Chechnya for good.

He then leaves the service, but in 2008, voluntarily reenters the ranks, and deploys, yet again, this time to fight the Georgians in South Ossetia

After that, he is again demobilized, but by 2013, shows up among Russian mercenaries backing Assad in Syria

This group, however, were acting, apparently, without the approval of the government in Moscow. Soon enough, some of their leaders back home are arrested, for illegal mercenary work; while the unit is recalled back to Russia, and supposedly disbanded.

Korneev, however, does not remain unemployed for long.

In 2014, he joins the new, Kremlin-approved Wagner mercenary group, about which I've written extensively here on PH, and is deployed with one of their units to Donbass, to Eastern Ukraine

He quickly makes a name for himself, and rises in the ranks, becomes a field commander, carrying a sinister nom de guerre, Leshiy (a "Forest Ghost" from Russian folklore, an evil supernatural being who leads travelers astray into a deep dark forest, and slaughters them without mercy... A silent, invisible killer, basically...)

He is proud of the nickname, and carries it on his sleeve patch there lol

Here he is with Mikhail Tolstykh, aka "Givi", a famous Donbass rebel warlord, since then assassinated in some internal squabble

Anyhow, later, he is redeployed again, back to Syria, still with Wagner, at first - as an "adviser" with the Sootoro, pro-Assad Christian militias

Later, though, he also goes into combat too

including in the Battle of Palmyra, where he is wounded

He is briefly sent back to Russia to recover, with his wife, in the photo up there, and their young daughter.

But, pretty quickly, he gets back to Syria and into action, and today, he is in command of all the Wagner forces there, and second in command of Wagner overall, reportedly, after the GRU officer Dmitry Utkin, aka "Wagner" himself; in his new role, he now, among other things, personally oversees security for Russian celebrities visiting Syria and the troops there, like actor Mikhail Porechenkov

Among the Wagnerites now in Syria, he too is still known as Leshiy, and that nickname is whispered in admiration and fear... Dude really is a living legend, now...

Fascinating story, really. A man who cannot live a peaceful life in a peaceful society, literally - doesn't know how, at this point... He is not the only one, many like him over there... War is all they know. Fighting and killing is all they know how to do... At least, today, there are groups such as Wagner, to offer them and their families decent compensation for employing their... skills, shall we say.

Before, most ended up becoming hitmen for the mafia, and shit like that...

Creepy. Sounds like they should make a movie about this guy. I mean, HOLLYWOOD should. 'Forest Ghost' would be a good title!! Or 'Ghost of the Dark Forest'.
