The upside is, folks clearly don't mind paying higher prices for stuff if they think it's serving a good cause (or that the government isn't the cause of the price increases). It will require finesse, but this is a big opportunity for revenue. Value-added tax, for example.

We'll see how long it lasts, though. There's still tons of business interests who want these tariffs gone, the GOP is just ignoring them for now.

History will show that his "trade wars are easy to win" was even more ridiculous than his "who knew healthcare was so complicated".

We are seeing that right now. Lots of people figure they are paying more for stuff is a good thing because now it comes from America and is made by Americans which may or may not be true. But when we get to hard times its going to change. Its funny how people get such short term memory loss in economics. Its like 2008 is forgotten. People spending like mad and shrugging if you even mention a downturn. Its almost like you are speaking a foreign language. Yet when it happens they have shocked face.

Retail is 4-10x the cost of the item crossing the border. So if that $10 hat I bought in Midtown crosses the border at ... $1? A 25% tariff is a quarter. Not $2.50.
