Conservatives must reckon with their policies’ discriminatory effects. That would be more likely if liberals stopped carelessly crying bigot.
Liberals and conservatives may never agree on whether or how deeply bigotry infects American conservatism. They don’t need to. What America needs is a conservatism whose devotees feel less stigmatized, and who earn that lack of stigma by trying harder to disentangle their support of small government and traditional morality from America’s history of bigotry. To make that possible, liberals and conservatives each need something from the other.

Let's try something different. Please refrain from commenting without reading the entire article. It's an interesting read.
The idea is that both sides give something and everyone moves forward. But they won't. Everyone would rather point fingers than give up something that is actually counter-productive to their goals.

Good luck with getting liberals to stop which is what that entire article is about.

Its not going to happen, ever.

Their party will need to crash and burn and be rebuild based on solid issues rather than the hate spewing people they are today.

Alt-right is certainly a synonym for racist, and the racists chose it themselves.

The word "racist" today is a dog whistle for the Left meaning white person.

According to the Left ALL white people are racist and guilty as hell.

It's not a dispute over policy.

It is a dispute over skin color.

It's a very good article that does a good job of exploring the issue from both sides. I don't know if it goes far enough in a couple of places, but there's a lot of truth in that there is some blame on both sides of the aisle for the current state of our discourse. The main takeaway is that often these arguments aren't aimed at reaching a truth so much as damaging the other side or coming out on top. Also, it serves as a great example of why it's childish and self-defeating to broadbrush an entire group of people just because you disagree with them politically.

Peter Beinart.

Short version. It is the Liberals fault, they call us bigots when we refuse health care to millions, along with hundreds of other things.

Suggestion, Peter, tell Republicans not to do those things we will quit calling them bigots.

PS, I read the entire article before responding, or knowing who the Author was. My opinion was formed while reading.

Well timed.

And this exposes the opposite problem. When people descend into mindless charges purely for political purposes, they're not only being blatantly dishonest, they're not helping themselves. Calling everyone of any flavor, politically or otherwise, a racist is patently wrong. But there are also blanket denials of racism when some racism exists too. That's just as uneducated and dishonest.
