BUNNIK, NETHERLANDS—Detailed analysis of video and photos has unequivocally established that the Buk missile that brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine nearly four years ago came from a Russia-based military unit, an international team of investigators said Thursday.

It is the clearest link yet published by the team of the involvement of Russian military in the deadly missile strike.

Head prosecutor Fred Westerbeke speaks to reporters next to a part of the BUK rocket that was fired on the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014. Westerbeke said the Joint Investigation Team, or JIT, is not yet ready to name suspects, but added: “I can say that we are now entering the ... last phase of the investigation.” (ROBIN VAN LONKHUIJSEN / AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

Prosecutors said they have presented their findings to Moscow and are seeking answers, but so far have not received a response. The international team running the criminal investigation appealed for help from witnesses who can testify about the involvement of the Russian military’s 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade based in the city of Kursk.

Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke said the new conclusion raised new questions: “Such as the question about how actively involved the brigade itself was in bringing down Flight MH17.”

Russia has always denied involvement in the downing of the jet.

Terrible, yes, but not surprising.

The world has known this since it happened.

Russia lying about it just makes it worse...
Well, we've known it was a Russian missile fired by Russian-aligned forces.

This is the first confirmation the missile came from a standing air defense unit of the Russian army, and not cat's paw rebels they have been arming.

It means that, at best, the Russian military contains rogue units who can't be trusted to not randomly murder people in their area of operations, and Russia knows it, and has tried to cover it up.

At worst, high command (up to Putin possibly) actually ordered this so as to send a message to the West RE: its interference in Ukraine.

Either way, it makes Russia look bad.

Not that they care...

Wonder if RT will mention this today?

They probably will, but insist on referring to the well-researched report as mere "allegations" from a "European" panel. Or some such nonsense.

Something has to happen here. There is virtually zero possibility professional soldiers manning an air-defense post didn't know they were firing into a civilian passenger corridor.

If Russia doesn't put them on trial or turn them over to Interpol, it's time to really hammer Russia in the economic sector. Problem is, I don't think the White House will do anything.

They will hide behind the Korea fracas to pretend as if they didn't even notice.

Bellingcat, a bunch of computer nerds, traced this missile and the movements of the launcher, using social media pics posted online by the Russian crew two or three years back!

All the Russian media are playing it down and spinning the hell out of it, especially for the home audience. More Western lies and slander against the great Motherland, is the main message over there...

I expect nothing less from them.

Unfortunately, lots of Russkies will probably believe their lies.

Just about all of the rest of the world knows better...
