Senators call for probe into VA hospital deaths allegedly tied to delayed care

Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake are calling for a Senate investigation and hearings into allegations that up to 40 Arizona veterans died while awaiting medical appointments at the Phoenix VA Medical Center.

The two Republican senators from Arizona sent a letter Wednesday to leaders of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs requesting a probe into "recent reports of gross mismanagement and neglect" at the facility.

McCain also wrote to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, citing a report in the Arizona Republic on whistle-blower allegations about veteran deaths and accusations about VA administrators keeping secret waiting lists.

"I am appalled by the number of veterans who stated to my office that the VA was just “waiting” or 'hoping' that they would die and be one less burden on the system," McCain wrote. "These increasing individual delays clearly illustrate systemic problems with how effectively the VA is providing care to our veterans."

Last week, Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, said the panel's investigators concluded as many as 40 Arizona veteran deaths could be related to VA delays in providing them medical care.

Some veterans say wait times now average 55 days.

Miller also said panel investigators had evidence that officials at the Phoenix VA Health Care System kept two sets of records to hide lengthy wait times for patients seeking doctor appointments and treatment, the Arizona Republic reported.

Dr. Sam Foote, a former VA doctor in the Phoenix system told CNN that the alleged secret waiting list was used by senior management to conceal the fact that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor.

Phoenix VA Health Care System officials said they've asked for an external review by the Inspector General and will address any problems quickly.

Sharon Helman, director of the Phoenix VA system, told the Arizona Republic on Tuesday she is unaware of any patients who died awaiting care, and that she does not know of any improper manipulation data related to patient access.

Flake told a news conference last week that the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs also is investigating the complaints about Arizona VA facilities.

In a statement, the VA said it "cares deeply" for veterans and added that the Phoenix VA took the issues "very seriously" and invited the independent VA Office of the Inspector General to complete a comprehensive review of these allegations."

Democrats don't actually care if it works or not, they just want a large government program to further help control the masses.

Its all about power and keeping people reliant on Uncle Sugar.

Deaths mean nothing to liberals as long as it supports the main goal.

ah, the alleged "secret waiting list" the VA uses to kill off veterans.
Well, that's conclusive proof right there, that is!

At least these guys qualified for "Brewercare", right? No?

Golly, who would have thought it?

So, your answer to an article that states the VA acted badly and needs to be fixed (because veterans died waiting for care) is to say that dependence on the VA (uncle sugar) is bad?

So where, in Spookycolt world do veterans go for care when they are injured in the line of duty? Oh, I know...they should just "suck it up" because you believe that such benefits should be eliminated for veterans, right?

I mean, it's not like they should actually investigate and fix the problem. Let's just dump those vets onto the street with no care at all, right?

They should have saved their military pay to cover any wounds received, personal responsibility, you know. These fuckers never cease to amaze.

and in your utopian world, no one ever dies from delayed care in private hospitals, right?

Supposedly they are uncovering secret wait lists with several VA hospitals that kept people from seeing doctors to make the VA look better and not have waiting lists. Pretty damning.

"Internal e-mails obtained by CNN show that top management at the VA hospital in Arizona knew about the practice and even defended it.
Dr. Sam Foote just retired after spending 24 years with the VA system in Phoenix. The veteran doctor told CNN in an exclusive interview that the Phoenix VA works off two lists for patient appointments:

There's an "official" list that's shared with officials in Washington and shows the VA has been providing timely appointments, which Foote calls a sham list. And then there's the real list that's hidden from outsiders, where wait times can last more than a year."

The VA is underfunded (fiscal responsibility) and dealing with an onslaught of disabled vets due to two factors:

1. The surge and the decade-long conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan

2. The lowering of physical standards (or, rather, the increase in exceptions and waivers that have been getting axed as of late) to put boots on the ground in the mid-to-late 2000's.

This is the result of a large fighting force fighting a protracted war where the enemy's main concern is to instill fear instead of rack up casualties. That means a lot of their weapons aren't designed to kill, but they can and often do. A lot of weapons are designed to maim.
