Americans Give GOP Edge in Handling Nation's Problems
Majority see need for third party
by Frank Newport

This story is part of an ongoing series on Gallup.com on Americans' views on the role and performance of government.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans see the Republican Party as better able than the Democratic Party to protect the country from terrorism and military threats, and to keep the country prosperous over the next few years.

These views come as record numbers of Americans are dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed and express highly negative opinions about a number of other dimensions of the federal government. Next year's elections provide Americans with an opportunity to vent their frustrations in the presidential and the congressional elections. At this point, Republicans, who currently control the House but not the presidency or the Senate, appear to be at least slightly better positioned going into the elections, given Americans' preference for the GOP to handle the nation's domestic and international woes.

Democrats held the advantage over the Republican Party on the "prosperous" dimension from 2003 through 2009, a period that included the majority of George W. Bush's presidency and the first year of Barack Obama's. The advantage switched to the GOP last year and remains so this year, by 48% to 39%.

Part of the problem is that during economic downturns the party in power will always take the brunt. When GHWB was President, "Its the economy, stupid" resonated with voters as a result of the recession. The aftermath being President Clinton getting elected. Now under different circumstances we have a bad economy with President Obama in charge. Deja Vu.

Yep, true.

And part of the problem, as former Reagan WH official Bruce Bartlett pointed out, is Obama and Dems ceded the ground on which the argument was framed to Republicans. As he noted, if no one is making the case for your side, the other side wins by default.

Yep. And that's been happening for years.

Interesting...

Particularly given President Obama's following along with many of President Bushs procedures, President Obama's great success in Libya, a lack of successful attacks on US intrests during his watch... etc. I guess it's going to take a long time to overcome the GOP stereotype of being strong on defense.

American's have very short term memory. Television developed this memory type and games for kids make them worse for long term memory. Those of us who can remember know who is the loser party and principles. Conservatives create monetary instability and democrats repair it. This last go round the repairs have been talked down by the loudest pundits, Rush and Glenn Blech. As the nation did not go into a full blown depression many think the government just doesn't care. Quite the contrary, it is the republican tea party that wants austerity to cut all programs and put America back into a depression like Herbert Hoover created.

Had FDR not meddled, the Depression would not have lasted as long as it did. LBJ created further welfare state policies that do nothing to improve the country.

Not much time to respond, have to get off to work, but, in a nutshell:

One poll, 13 months away from the election. One poll alone shows relatively little.
To get a good insight, you need a DNA pool of data from a number of pollsters, tracked over time.
Believe me, I am following ALL the numbers.
Thanks for the helpful thread, Jack.

I will be returning with other information relevant to this poll.
