for centuries, Russians and Ukrainians lived together, fought the same enemies together, and lived through a lot of historical commotions together as well- Mongols invasion, Swedes, Poles, Revolutions, Stalin etc, etc.
They also together defeated Nazi Germany, Ukraine lost millions of her citizens fighting in WWII, there are still graves and monuments to heros , partisans, who spilled their blood, sacrificed their lives for that Ukrainians will not become the slave nation to the "superior" Arian people.
Then there was a western part of Ukraine, which for centuries was occupied part by Poland and /or Austrian/ Hungarian empire, they even talk with a little different dialect, than the rest of Ukraine and they are mostly of different religion , while the majority of Ukrainians are orthodox like russians.
Now ,during the war , in the western Ukraine -there was a nationalist movement started even before the German occupation , which decided to engage in collaboration with Hitler army in order to fight soviets.

And in this, in participating in atrocities, in collaborating with those , who wanted to exterminate Jews, Russians and Ukrainians and/or turn them into the slaves ,they forever put a shame on those Western Ukes, who smeared themselves fighting side by side with SS in the eyes of Russians and of most of Ukrainians.
Now the heirs of those people, the rusophobes, the SS apologists, whose fathers and grand fathers have blood on their hands of thousands of Jews, Ukrainians and Russian, who are destroying the graves of the soldiers died fighting Hitler army, those who conduct a yearly parades of veterans of SS in Western Ukraine, those people, who helped the anti Yanukovich parties to get power in Kiev are themselves now in power too.
Any surprise ,that overwhelming majority of Russian and millions of Ukrainians ,whose parents died fighting Nazis and nazi collaborators, do not want to do anything with those ?
Amazing, that USA and EU foreign policy "mavens" got themselves entangled in that historical atrocity on the side ,which have open anti-semites and nazi heirs in their ranks.
Does the hatred of Putin totally blindsided them to reality on the ground?
And for those , who think that the Crimeans voted under the gun- no gun needed to cast the vote to separate themselves from nazis and anti-semites who got into power in Kiev.
More, if I were a leader of Batkivshhina party, the supposedly democratic party of the western ideals, i would separate myself from those RW proto-fascsistic extremists, because quite possible ,that even Ukrainians and Russians in Eastern Ukraine would like to follow the example of Crimea, instead of letting fascists to rule them

PS. If not for those nationalistic assholes in Kiev, there would be no referendum and there would not be any disturbances in other regions in Ukraine. Majority would have gladly accepted pro-EU positions- if not for the nazis and fascists gaining a lot of power in Kiev.
The referendum was an obvious logical response for the West' unwitting support of anti-russian and nazi mobs in Kiev....

no one should be surprised by what is happening in ukraine.

the US and the EU made the same mistake in ukraine as they did with the arab spring which is, they are NOT thinking about the consequences of their supporting the overthrow of governments that are in power by using their idea of what a government should be.

If the vote taken in Crimea is in favor of siding with Russia, what more can the west say? Why is it our business what those people want for themselves?

Should we also remember that USSR with Stalin made starve millions of people in Ukraine during the thirties, attacked Poland in 1939 jointly with the Nazis, took the Baltic countries and Yuri Zhivao tries to focus only on the fight against nazism.... ? Not to mention how Eastern European countries were put under the Sovietic rule.. And he does stress the fact that according to what he thinks all Ukrainians are fascist.... and there was a coup to get rid of Yanushenko.....But the Ukrainian Parliament is still the same and voted the eviction of Yanushenko........ after this man fled away....... like a coward.....
