SPLC calls Family Research Council a hate group

Is this unfair? Should that designation be retracted?

Here on the Southern Poverty Law Center website is Blood & Honour, a racist skinhead group with members who killed two homeless people they deemed inferior, according to police. A quick scroll away is the World Church of the Creator, which calls nonwhites "mud races" and preaches "racial holy war" that has, according to authorities, inspired some members to commit violent crimes.
Then there's the Family Research Council.

The SPLC says the conservative Washington policy group is listed as a hate group because "it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda" about lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.
The FRC is claiming the designation as a hate group led to the recent shooting of a security guard

While the SPLC defended its label Thursday, saying it was about the "demonization" of gays and a long history of anti-gay activism, the FRC and its conservative allies struck back.

"I believe the Southern Poverty Law Center should be held accountable for their reckless use of terminology," FRC president Tony Perkins said.

In response, SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok said the FRC was looking to make gains from the tragedy.

"Perkins and his allies, seeing an opportunity to score points, are using the attack on their offices to pose a false equivalency between the SPLC's criticisms of the FRC and the FRC's criticisms of LGBT people."

Since the SPLC has done nothing for the better part of a decade than add names to their "hate" list and collect massive donations for their "endowment", I think the FRC should sue them for libel and collect a big check from them.

I was wondering if they could do that.

Of course they do. The anti American SPLC hates white Christians. They are in part responsible for the shooting.

Dude, I'm opposed to the extreme fundies that want to oppress people and try to implement a theocracy in America.
Does that make me responsible too?

It's a pretty provocative move. I'd have to see more evidence of the activities SPLC considers the hallmarks of a hate group before making a judgment. I think the evidence, rather than the accusation, should be foregrounded. Otherwise, SPLC risks loosing credibility for all the other work it does. I agree about building a big endowment. I stopped giving them money after they sent me a video featuring cool scenes from their very posh digs--all waterfalls and concrete.

That's true, but it's the contents of the property and its size that matter here. One thing I've always trusted SPLC for is keeping track of hate groups--it's one of the two big things they do as far as I'm concerned, with their "Teaching Tolerance" journal being the other. And some of their choices of hate groups are interesting or even controversial. They call the Nation of Islam a hate group, for example. But I'd like to see where they think status as a hate group and the first amendment rub against each other. I don't know....this deserves greater examination, I think.

BTW, if you simply scrutinize and publicize the activities of a hate group, their status as a such should be pretty obvious, no?

Sure that's it Inky.

This groups are just Christians that believe, as many do, that abortion is a sin. You should be on their side, the genocide of colored peoples should anger you, but it doesn't you are way to trendy for that.

The SPLC are Zionist anti-American scum. They are just fear mongers.
