Wonderful editorial from a former CIA director. Cliff Notes version: Many say the U.S. will undermine itself by opposing Palestinian statehood with a unilateral veto when it has spent so much time endorsing the Arab Spring, but what this is really about is Obama personally and how he will compromise himself with this action by adopting a position, that is required by politics, but that everyone knows he personally considers anathema.

Obama has personal convictions on an issue? Since when?

It's less about personal convictions on Obama's part and more about his personal policy approach. Obama has been busy all year telling God and everybody that he supports Democracy in the Middle East. And now the U.S. is going to get pitted on that issue because politics demand a U.S. veto in direct contravention to that policy.

But no one with a brain believed him. Certainly the Syrians, Yemenis, Bahrainis, as well as the Palestinians knew Obama was full of shit with regard to "democracy". And let's not forget the Iraqis and Afghans, who know firsthand what the U.S. regime means by "democracy" .

He's the latest end of a long tail wagged by Israel. What's different from his predecessors?

Man, so much hate for Obama. I wish I'd seen that when Bush was ruining the country.

A vote for a Palestinian state is a vote against democracy. At no time have the Palestinian people been operating in a democracy. they have elections, but not free elections for opposition to the Fatah party is stiffled both physically and financially.

A democracy is not defined by its first election, but its second.

Palestine is a democracy, and the astroturf Western puppet parties have been decisively rejected by the Palestinian people.

In their second election, the Palestinians voted for Fatah.

The last time the Palestinians went to the polls was for parliamentary elections in 2006, which Hamas won by a landslide.

Fatah lost because it was ridden thru with corruption and was seen as an arm of the Israeli govt... In fact it has been supported in the past by the Mossad.

Hamas OTOH was recognized by the Palestinians as a group which built and maintained hospitals and clinics, helped the poor with rent and resolved disputes, distributed medicine and clean water, funded schools and generally demonstrated itself to be positive part of the community. The Palestinians voted accordingly.
