Where all you need is belief. FActs don't matter. Rational arguments to the contrary don't matter. Many right wingers fall into this. Just seek out news and blogs that say what you want to believe. Anything to the contrary is just ignore, blame it on the devils work, or just claim it is biased. When your so called "facts" are questioned, just play the persecution card and deflect.

A great example is watching Newt Gingrich say he believes crime is up in this country even when the facts that it is down is brought up. He just went on and on about how he believes it.

Fox news has done a great job of propaganda and getting its viewers to deny any facts they don't like a "bias" as they watch the biggest biased crap you can get

I would say, rather, that they have made reality experiential, and fluid. For the new-new Conservatives, reality is whatever one perceives it to be, and whatever one feels genuine, independent of factual data.

For instance, the constant defense of Trump as a candidate is "He is genuine, and he is a businessman,"and that is their reality. The fact that his "truth" changes with the next soundbite doesn't matter; it feels like an accurate assessment, so for them "Genuine" Trump is reality. It doesn't matter that the factual record demonstrates multiple business failures, costing billions of dollars to others, the "successful businessman" feels like an accurate assessment, so that is their reality.

The new mantra of The Right is "Perception informs reality". It is a very dangerous philosophy, particularly when it begins to seep its way into politics.

You're exactly right. It's about 'truth' not facts.

There are indications that violent crime has taken an upswing this year.

Lately when I have seen people defend the statement that crime is down, they've been citing numbers from 2014.

Gingrich is a horrid little man, but sticking to the high bar of going with facts not feelings, what numbers are you aware of for 2016 to go along with the news reports about homicides rising in our major cities?

I have made this argument about Liberals for years now.

As for Crime Rates:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/01/19/fbi-murders-and-other-violent-crimes-increased-last-year/?utm_term=.bd82eba4fa82

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/14/us/murder-rates-cities-fbi.html?_r=0

HOWEVER! The above stats are likely just an increase from the downward inclination for crime rates in the bast few years.

Again, this is all in how we look at the actual statistics.

One has to wonder how much current society plays into that. For example, we all have people we know who say they have 500 "friends" on Facebook and use that as some sort of popularity gauge. In reality they don't "know" all those people, let alone be friends. We also see it in tv programming with the huge amount of reality shows. They feel as if these are real life events and aren't staged. I think modern way of life has changed our views on whats "real" and what isn't.
