Actually, that's how it is now. A candidate can win just 11 states and take the EC, the other 39 states be damned. But you WOULD be right to point out that the popular election of a president would lead candidates to campaign only in cities, which have by far the majority of our population, and ignore rural areas.
Your right, but even if a candidate only campaigned in those 11 states they would be faced with a broader spectrum of subjects to elaborate on, making the candidates expose more of themselves for all others to see. The wants and needs of a couple of large cities robs the vast majority of people a more clear picture of the candidate. Hillary could hide under a rock in New York during an entire campaign season, and still win their vote.

Somewhere they can't find me.
We did just come out of a major calamity...The Obama presidency!.... eight years of stagnant growth...millions upon millions on food stamps...aliens pouring into our country on trains and buses....coal workers thrown out of work...factories moving to other countrys...full time jobs replaced by temporary part time jobs...Kids being taught in school that the North Pole is going to melt and drown us all....the racial divide widens sharply because of fake news (Trevon Martin, and Michel Brown incidents stand out)....Historical monuments taken down..... Americans finally stood up and said enough of this crap....lets put a person in with backbone, and willing to fight for ideals that have made this country the greatest ever in history. You do not have to dig very deep to see the progress that has been made...just pull your legs out of the muck and mire...pretend that CNN news is just another episode of Saturday night live....funny but never should be taken seriously.

You just ain't whistlin' "Dixie," bro.

OTOH, maybe you are.

Electoral votes are based on state totals and have nothing whatsoever to do with winning counties...get a fucking clue...number of states is also meaningless, only the electoral votes count. SMFH
Congressional districts are represented by a number of counties...the candidate that wins the most counties in a district wins that district...The Candidate that wins the most congressional districts wins the electoral votes of the State. If counties are meaningless explain how one county in Florida was able to hold up a confirmation of a President for months ....Bush vs Gore. You cannot leap from the ballot box to the electoral college as if nothing happened in between. The Electoral College is not a place, but a process....and counties are a big part of that process when it comes to deciding Congressional districts. In closing ...someone ...preferably your mother, or a near relative should hold you down and wash your mouth out with a bar of lava soap.

You keep bringing up counties as if they matter. County lines are of no meaning at all. The winner of a congressional district gets the most votes in that district. Counties SOMETIMES have something to do with the way district lines are drawn, but not always. Some counties have multiple districts within them; others are drawn without regard to county line at all. Certainly the number of votes someone gets in various counties has zero to do with their election.

The Candidate that wins the most congressional districts wins the electoral votes of the State.
Again, this has nothing to do with congressional districts (except in Maine and Nebraska, which designate some of their electoral votes to be decided within CD's
If counties are meaningless explain how one county in Florida was able to hold up a confirmation of a President for months ....Bush vs Gore.
Because in most states, Florida among them, elections are administered by county officials. They are in charge of running polling places and counting votes. If they mess something up, they can hold up the whole state because there are still a lot a votes to certify.

Counties have nothing to do with the way electoral votes are calculated. At all. If that were true, they would be mentioned in the Constitution. In fact, the selection of electors is left to the individual states. To my knowledge, no state differentiates votes for president by county as you've suggested. The total number of votes in the state is the only factor, except for ME and NE, which give two electors to the winner of the overall state ballot and each of the other electors is selected by congressional district.
