President Donald Trump on Tuesday denounced comments by French President Emmanuel Macron that NATO was experiencing “brain death.” The American leader said he could see France “breaking off” from the Western military alliance.

In comments to the press ahead of a NATO meeting in London on Tuesday, Trump said Macron’s words had been “very, very nasty” to the 28 other member states. He added that it was “very insulting” for the French president to label NATO as brain dead. “You can’t go around saying that about NATO,” Trump added.

“I do see France breaking off. I’m looking at him and I’m saying he (Macron) needs protection more than anybody and I see him breaking off, so I’m a little surprised at that,” Trump said.

Trump has himself criticized the international body, previously describing NATO as “obsolete.” And in comments just before arriving in the U.K., Trump also called out some of the alliance members as “delinquent,” in an apparent reference to the amount of money that some nations spend on defense.

In 1966, France, under President Charles de Gaulle, left NATO’s military structure, doubting the organization’s might against any invasion from the Soviet Union. Full membership by France was restored only 10 years ago.

LOL

The French president gave an interview last month decrying the “brain death” of NATO, which he said had failed to account for America’s shrinking commitment under Trump.

Trump himself has called NATO “obsolete,” openly questioned whether the U.S. would come to the defense of allies under attack (the very foundation of the alliance), and privately told aides on several occasions last year he wants to withdraw from the alliance. But the notion that somebody else would question NATO, and blame its demise on Trump, has enraged him.

And now Trump is lashing out at Macron. “NATO serves a great purpose,” he declared today. “And I hear that President Macron said NATO is ‘brain dead.’ I think that’s very insulting to a lot of different forces … When you make a statement like that, that is a very, very nasty statement to 28 — including them — 28 countries.”

Manipulating children into doing what you want by pretending to demand they do the opposite thing is a trick most parents learn to use. It usually stops working around the age of 5.

Poor Trump. He gets blamed for things he says and does and then lashes out when a leader blames him for the Trump results. Whether Trump screws up NATO or global warming, he is always in a race to reverse all progress. Will someone give him a cave to live in to live out his dream of the good old cave man days.
