I personally agree. She did commit other crimes and those should not be ignored, however.
Other crimes committed against other victims? Or against her father?

She is clearly guilty of improper disposal of a corpse, but I'd be surprised if she had ever been charged with that.

Yeah I don't know UK law, but I doubt her crimes outside of the murder would total 9 years.

In Texas she'd be executed. I believe theft of the elderly is a 3rd degree felony. Felony + murder is a one-way ticket to the death house.

I digress.

I am conflicted on this one...

Perhaps she should just have been convicted of fraud or whatever, for falsely collecting his benefits; but let her off on killing him?

Not sure...

"Barbara Coombes Sentenced to Nine Years For Murder of Her Father", the Guardian, July 2018.

(Can't link, but that is the title of the news report.)

Barbara Coombes killed her father, Kenneth, after more than 40 years of horrific sex abuse that included using her as a model for child pornographers.

Convicted of manslaughter with dimished responsibility, the judge gave Coombes a prison sentence that, to my eye, looks as if it would be harsh for a British first degree murder conviction.

I don't often complain British justice is too harsh. It's normally a much, much more lenient system than ours, IMO.

But that's what makes this case discussion-worthy to me.

So, what say you? Was Coombes' sentence too harsh?

IMO, she should have gotten time served and been released.

Your thoughts?
Trauma like that can make a person a serial murderer.
Maybe she's still a risk to society?

Prisoners often just serve half their time when they behaved well in prison. Some cases, they get to go home but have a tag so they're under curfew.
If she pleaded guilty she will do 1/3. If she pleaded not guilty she will do 9 years.

Was she charged with fraud too? That could be 5 years.

Fraud. She committed fraud and there is only one category for murder - we don't have degrees. Murder is murder = life.

Here's a link to the story: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...an-killed-father-shovel-child-porn/782713002/

And an excerpt:

I think that she'd have likely received some sympathy in court for admitting to a passionate act of violence in killing her father under those circumstances, but she lied and fraudulently collected his benefits for years rather than confessing to the killing.
Murder is murder, we don't have degrees - and it automatically carries a life sentence. She was found guilty of manslaughter not murder.

''At Manchester crown court on Wednesday, Coombes pleaded not guilty to murdering her father but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

Sentencing her to nine years, the judge Timothy King said he did not accept she acted in self-defence. However, he accepted she killed while suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression as a result of “40 years of extreme mental, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of your father”.

Her rational judgment was impaired and she was unable to exercise self-control, he told her, noting that she had attempted suicide on a number of times in her youth and had self-harmed throughout her life.

The judge said he did not believe Coombes would ever have confessed had “the net not started to close in around her”. A representative of Stockport housing association had become suspicious of Kenneth Coombes’s whereabouts and was due to make a house visit the day after his daughter confessed.

The housing officer made several attempts to check on his welfare but was repeatedly sent away by Coombes, who on one occasion claimed her father – who then would have been 99 – was at a Buddhist retreat in Manchester.

For the past 12 years she had been fraudulently claiming benefits amounting to £189,125 – both his pension and carers’ allowance for herself. Her barrister, Martin Heslop QC, told the court she was caught in a “catch-22”, unable to stop claiming the money because she could not admit to anyone that her father was dead.''
