With support/permission of VP Pence, apparently...

WHY DID FRANKLIN GRAHAM (LEFT) TRAVEL TO RUSSIA THIS MONTH TO MEET WITH VYACHESLAV VOLODIN (RIGHT), A RUSSIAN OFFICIAL SANCTIONED BY THE U.S.? CREDIT: INSTAGRAM

Franklin Graham, America’s most prominent evangelical leader, says Vice President Mike Pence signed off on his trip to Russia earlier this month. While there, Graham met with sanctioned Kremlin officials — even as U.S. investigations ramped up into Moscow’s election interference efforts. One official Russian governmental social media account touted the meeting as a way to “[intensify] contacts between the State Duma and the U.S. Congress.”

In an interview with RIA Novosti, a major Russian state-run outlet, Graham said he called Pence directly to tell him of the trip. “He was very happy to hear the news,” Graham said. “And he admitted that he fully supported my decision.”

Neither Pence’s office nor the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association responded to ThinkProgress’s requests for comment.

According to interviews in Russian media and photos on his own social media accounts, Graham, currently the chair of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, traveled to Moscow earlier this month to meet with a number of prominent Russian figures. Most notably, Graham had a sit-down meeting with Russian Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who is close to President Vladimir Putin and who has been sanctioned by the U.S. since 2014 for his role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

I wish I had an answer for you.

From what I know about Graham I can only guess he was there to be a putrid piece of shit, and piss all over his father's legacy. As that's what he had planned regardless of where he was.

It's funny, on numerous levels. For one, because certain factions of US religious right-wing seem to like Russian Orthodox nationalists for being similar Christian conservatives, despite the fact that the Russians see most Western Christians as heathens and heretics and, as I have written at length, members of "American" or "foreign" sects, such as Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Mormons, are routinely treated like shit in Russia...

And, also, the fact that those like Graham like Russia because they mistreat their LGBTs. Ironically, he is meeting with Volodin, about whom for years have been flying rumors of secret homosexuality :D He, of course, always denied this and blamed his political enemies for spreading such libelous lies about him ;)

Billy Graham made a very controversial trip to the Soviet Union back in 1982. Several more during the 90s. He had always wanted to bring religion there. Some said he had a soft spot for Russia/Soviet Union most of his life. The Russian Orthodox Church apparently loved him too.

‘American Pastor’ Billy Graham Remembered in Russia
That might have been true back then...

Today's Russia is very different, as is the Orthodox Church, just check this out
Russian Orthodox priest, backed by a crowd of followers, intimidates couple of Protestant/Baptist ladies, who were preaching in his town without his consent. Dude talks like a bloody mafia boss: "This is our territory. You do not work here without our permission. You come back here again, it will go much worse for you." And instructs his men to tear apart the Protestant women's little stall...

This is modern Russia, in all it's glory...
