Despite separations, very few young children handed to Department of Health and Human Services

...

Since the initiative to prosecute all adults crossing the border illegally -- including those with children -- went into effect, only 36 children under age five have entered HHS care -- and not all of those were necessarily separated from adults with them because of the policy.

As a result of the zero-tolerance policy, parents were sent to the Department of Justice to face charges. As children can't follow their parents into jails, they were designated in the same way as unaccompanied migrant children, or those who come to the US by themselves, and thus turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services, which cares for such children. Almost 80% of those children in the department's care were teenagers, according to the figures provided by a HHS spokesman. Out of the total population, 2,458 children under age 13 were in HHS custody, of which 482 were aged 5 years or younger.

But a much smaller number of those children would have come into HHS custody since May 6, when the prosecution policy was made public. While not all of these children may still be in HHS care, the agency received 1,045 children under the age of 13 years in that time frame. Of those, 36 were under the age of five and only three were under the age of 1 year old.

Customs and Border Protection has previously told CNN that it does not separate children under five from an adult except for a handful of circumstances, including concern for the child, an inability to verify guardianship or a criminal history of the parent.

There are also other circumstances that a young child may enter the country without an adult, such as a teenager bringing their younger sibling, or even their own child, that could account for some of the young children in HHS care.

Try reading the entire article. Hint: It is well established that ~80% of children came here on their own.

The Trump administration has set up at least three “tender age” shelters to detain babies and other young children who have been forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, The Associated Press has learned.

3 shelters for how many babies?

::::::::::::::::::::;

It has been reported the Trump has charged ICE to take over duties from HHS.
Before Trump, HHS used to remand children to the Office Of Refugee Resettlement for detention.

Unaccompanied Alien Children
On March 1, 2003, the Homeland Security Act of 2002, Section 462, transferred responsibilities for the care and placement of unaccompanied alien children from the Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service to the Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).

Trump took the care of immigrant children whether unaccompained minors or minors separated from their parents from HHS/ORR and told ICE to take over placement and care of the children.

So if HHS has 30, or 3 or 300 children..that does not account for all the children in the system.

CNN has no more answers than any other news outlet on the where abouts and numbers of children in the system.

In Fact, this post proves CNN is just as confused and unknowing than every other news outlet in America.

"On their own", meaning without an adult?

You think toddlers are walking from Central America to Texas alone?
From the link

Out of the total population, 2,458 children under age 13 were in HHS custody, of which 482 were aged 5 years or younger.

So we really don't have a breakdown of how many were 6 - 13 years of age before May 6th? Same with the 482 kids - how many were babies up to 5 years old?

the agency received 1,045 children under the age of 13 years in that time frame.

Nope no breakdown on those numbers either.

Add the two group of 13 and over - together and that adds up to 3550

Holy crap!! That's a lot of kids. Who know's how many of them were say, under the age of 10....

And I highly doubt even most kids at 13 are crossing the border alone.

I was just thinking the same thing. It's HSS giving out the numbers and all the agencies involved have been all over the place, contradicting each other, over and over again. Was wondering why CNN published that without further info.

Don't believe the fake news the OP is trying to put out there. News media and advocates for immigrant children do not have clear information for all the agencies tasked with care and detention for immigrant children.

This is issue not solved and not going away.

It is the weekend and our focuses with turn to other things, but lets not forget ...America still does not have all the answers on where all these children are, and when and if they can be, or will be reunited with their families and parents.

The OP is attempting to ...move us along by falsely telling us there is nothing here to see.

I call Bullshit!

I think in the lack of any information form the administration and no comment from the various agencies...CNN was desperate to get out any 'official' statement or numbers.

I suspect there is way more to the story than what the OP is trying to suggest...but I know enough to know that CNN no way has all the answers.

One statement from HHS does not answer all the questions advocates have. Not even close.

This is one aspect of this debacle that troubles me most.

We don't have good data. We don't know much about the children, and I keep reading about the cages, using drugs as chemical straightjackets, sleeping on concrete, etc.

Plus I am very worried there's no adequate system in place to identify or track the children.

In such chaos, severe abuse and neglect is virtually guaranteed. Children will be made gravely ill or even die.

Our government is committing mass child abuse.
