Putin's Il-96

Dude likes gold, I'll say that, here are pics from the newest one, nearly all the furniture is decorated in gold

even the bed

even the damn toilet lid

He got a nice gym up there, he does like to keep active...

He got 4 of these, apparently, each one worth about $400 million. Nobody ever knows in advance which one of them he'll decide to use on any given trip... Typical paranoid KGB thing lol
Not exactly roughing it is he? LOL

Some say he is the richest man on Earth... lol

I think he doesn't even need his own personal wealth. The oligarchs are his wealth. Whenever he wants something, he just takes one of them, like his piggybank, shakes him upside down, and gets out of him money for whatever it is he wants. He wanted them to fund stuff for the Olympics in Sochi, they jumped to it. World Cup. Crap in Crimea. Etc, etc...

That would not surprise me in the least.

Definitely, and I would also add that some of those world leaders sucking up to him also helps him get whatever he wants. We discussed that in another thread. LOL

It's a pity we came up with such dogs:

The Boomerang

Lol, be fair, Australia was hardly an industrial giant during the 1930s and 1940s! It had a population of roughly 6 million, and each state had a different rail gauge. That it produced any home-grown combat aircraft was pretty impressive!

ANT-20 Maksim Gorky, the Titanic of Soviet skies. built on the orders of Stalin to showcase the might and glory of the Soviet Union

This was a huge plane, for its time (in red below), it carried 20 crew plus up to 70 passengers, and had a wingspan comparable to modern airliners!

It featured on board all kinds of previously unheard of entertainment and amenities for the passengers

Sadly, during one holiday event, right over Moscow, where the ANT-20 was doing a flyover, accompanied by interceptors, one of the interceptor pilots began doing tricks in the air to show off (as we now know from archive investigations, he was actually ordered to do this by superiors, to further bring people's attention to the magnificent huge aircraft he was escorting; but, at the time, of course, they blamed it all on the pilot himself; I think his widow ended up dying in a GULag camp, not surprisingly...)

This chilling last photo was taken seconds, before the interceptor pilot apparently lost control and slammed right into the Gorky. The small plane was pulverized, and the huge Gorky went on fire and crashed too. There were dozens of people on board, including the engineers and notable factory workers who made the plane; and many of them also brought their wives and kids on the flight... :(

The crash of "Maksim Gorky" is said to have had a very powerful effect on Stalin. He not only refused to use planes himself, ever since, only traveling by train; but forbid all the other powerful officials from flying as well...
Now that is just a pathetic sight!^

First off... they have biplane "chase" planes... lol. (probably there sitting looking in case the thing explodes they have some idea of where it started...)

For having 6... 8 engines... it's not really that big of a craft... seems like most of the bulk is taken up in "wingspan" and engines to power that wingspan...

Next, I see an additional engine (pair) was added over the fuselage... looks like an after-thought, was it perhaps under-powered off the drawing board? (Looks like it would be very high in "drag coefficient," more or less a flying brick.)

Next... it doesn't even have retractable landing gear, that is going to cost them maybe as much gas as running two or three additional fighters by itself...

And not exactly "bristling" with guns, shooting one of these down, I would feel kind of bad in a way... for a moment before I chewed them up...

Thx :)
