Interesting, albeit speculative, article by Niall Ferguson, a History Professor at Harvard. Given that it is impossible to predict a hypothetical, at least some of these speculations are entirely plausible. What strikes me most plausible is this quote: "Replaying the history game without 9/11 suggests that, ironically, the real impact of the attacks was not on Americans but on the homelands of the attackers themselves."

What Professor Ferguson doesn't say is that, 9/11 or not, the only way this clash of cultures could turn out would be with more impact on the homelands of the attackers and less on the superpower of the United States.
