Now, I haven't seen anyone ask... The distance of the walk is what, 1500 miles?

These are supposed to be families with children (looked like a group of 10-20 families in front and all behind it seem to be men), now, if they are making 30 miles a day walking, that's 2000-2500 calories a day, probably 10 glasses of water per person in the desert per day... Where's all the food and water coming from?

Now, why did these thousands of "families" decide to uproot what lives they did have and just leave to America all simultaneously like that? What event happened to them?

Technically, asylum is requested by those that have entered the country, while refugee status is requested by those not yet in the country. In each case, such request is made due to documented political or religious persecution. Poverty conditions, again technically, is not criteria for such requests.
You are correct inasmuch as economic duress is not accepted by bodies such as the UNHCR as a criterion for refugee status. However, displacement due to the effects of war, political instability, and natural disasters, as well as the usual ethic, religious, political, and tribal persecutions, is. So if we are signatories to these conventions, we have the responsibility to accept those deemed refugees, and each case needs to be determined upon its merits.

Without poor immigrants from the south, who is going to pick your fruit and vegetables?
Who's going to help your mother goto the bathroom in the nursing home?
Who is going to take care of the ground at Republican's mansions?

Illegal immigrants toiled for governor

December 1, 2006
SUCHITEPEQUEZ, Guatemala -- Outside his aqua-colored concrete house here, Rene Alvarez Rosales paused under an almond tree to answer questions about a subject with which he has surprising familiarity: Governor Mitt Romney's Belmont lawn.
For about eight years, Rosales said, he worked on and off landscaping the grounds at Romney's home, occasionally getting a "buenos dias" from Romney or a drink of water from his wife, Ann.
"She is very nice," said Rosales, 49.
About 6 miles away in Copado, a 37-year-old man who recently returned to Guatemala from the United States told a similar story, describing long days tending Romney's 2 1/2-acre grounds.
"They wanted that house to look really nice," said the worker, who asked to remain anonymous. "It took a long time."
